There is plenty of recreation for everyone in Madera County. Skiing, snowmobiling, great watersports at Bass Lake, fishing, camping, golf, or take a train ride on the Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad.

Oakhurst is the southern gateway to Yosemite National Park. It was originally called Fresno Flats in the 1850's. In the Fresno Flats Historic Park there are several historic buildings that are part of the museum complex.

Nearby is the Wassama Round House State Historic Park. This site is used by local Native Americans as a ceremonial meeting place.

As you travel toward Yosemite you will pass the Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad, originally operated from 1899 to 1931. The Shay steam locomotives number 15 was built in 1913 and weighs 60 tons. Near the southern entrance to Yosemite is Wawona, where there is a hotel, golf course, and the pioneer history center. Close by is the Mariposa grove of giant sequoias.
